Gov. Jim Pillen will undergo procedure to help treat his broken ribs after he fell while horseback riding with his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter near Columbus on Sunday.Pillen's office said his recovery at Nebraska Medicine "has progressed well," and there are no new issues. He suffered an injury to his spleen, kidney, lungs, and a minor fracture on a vertebrae on his spine as well as multiple fractured ribs. The broken ribs are the main focus of his treatment, according to his office, so he will undergo a rib fixation procedure that will stabilize the broken ribs using metal plates."It will promote stronger long-term healing of the ribs, assist with pain management during the recovery process and reduce the odds of complications. Based on the Governor's health profile and active lifestyle, his doctors consider him an ideal candidate for this procedure," said his office. The procedure was scheduled for Christmas Day, and it was expected to last about four hours. He will stay at the hospital several days to recover.Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly will be the acting Governor during the procedure because of the anesthesia. The Governor's office is expected to provide an update after the procedure is complete and Pillen talks with his doctors.
