I take exception to the letter to the editor which appeared in the Aiken Standard on July 7, 2026, under the heading “Communism has no place in America.” The author asserts that the democratic socialists have taken over the Democratic Party. No such thing has occurred. History has shown that a socialist movement within the Democratic Party has been and remains a minor faction within the party. Their recent electoral successes are not new in American politics and mirrors previous eras where hard line social policies have sparked a political backlash.
