Devon Newsome, 32, had transported 29 guns to a New York resident in Georgia on May 21, 2023. NewsChannel 13 has obtained court documents in which New York State Police are asking to take away one of the correction officer's guns. Police argued that the officer represents a danger to themselves or others. The document states that police were told that the cause of manner of Brooks' death are still pending. However, the preliminary autopsy results from the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office state that the cause of death is asphyxia due to compression of the neck. Thirteen corrections officers and one nurse were named in this case at Marcy Correctional Facility.
