Cathy Terkanian was a young mother, only 16 at the time of her daughter's birth. Eleven-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) lives in rural Massachusetts with her mother, Janet (Julianne Nicholson), an offbeat acupuncturist who stumbles from one romantic situation to another until she tires of them. This quietly ambitious film is a meandering love story of a mother and daughter and the tenuous time between childhood and young teen. In many ways, Lacy acts as a caretaker and spouse to her mother, and the two have a closeness that is both endearing and claustrophobic at times.

Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights) directs this musical featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman that's a loose adaptation of Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which in turn was based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its 1939 film adaptation. Think of it as a Wicked Witch origin story starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba (eventually the wicked one) and Ariana Grande as Glinda (eventually the good one). Jeff Goldblum stars as the Wizard. Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Black Hawk Down) directs this sword-and-sandal sequel to his Oscar-winning Gladiator (2000) set 16 years later. The sequel tells the story of Marcus Aurelius' grandson, Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal), who for his safety was sent away from Rome as a child after Aurelius' death. Now an adult, he's the true heir to the Roman throne but living in North Africa under the alias Hanno when the Roman army led by General Acacius (Pedro Pascal) attacks, taking him prisoner and returning him to Rome as a spoil of war, completely unaware of his identity. He's bought and trained as a gladiator by powerbroker Macrinus (Denzel Washington), where he's forced to fight in the Colosseum for the pleasure of Rome's corrupt twin emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger), whose rule has brought the empire to the precipice of revolt. Soon Lucius' mother, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), now married to General Acacius, discovers her son has returned. (148 min.)

Writer and director Marielle Heller (The Diary of a Teenage Girl) helms this magical-realism/horror-comedy based on Rachel Yoder's 2021 novel about a woman (Amy Adams) who pauses her art career to become a stay-at-home mom, but her new life takes a surreal turn when she sometimes transforms into a dog. Fixman about a mysterious terrorist known only as Traveler (Justin Bateman) who blackmails LAX TSA agent Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton) into allowing a dangerous suitcase through security and onto a Christmas Day flight. If he doesn't, Traveler promises to kill Ethan's pregnant girlfriend, Nora (Sofia Carson). (119 min.)

Stephen Herek (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Mr. Holland's Opus) directs Hailey DeDominicis' script about old flames Avery (Lindsay Lohan) and Logan (Ian Harding) whose relationship ended a decade ago but who coincidentally wind up at the same Christmas gathering at their new significant others' parents' house. Worried that their old relationship would be a distraction as they both try to ingratiate themselves to Cameron (Jon Rudnitsky) and Cassie's (Katie Baker) mother, Erica (Kristin Chenoweth), and father, Leonard (Dan Bucatinsky), they agree to pretend to be total strangers.
