While you read my AutoHunter Picks, I’ll be in Michigan attending the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race, a neat event in the middle of nowhere, 45 minutes north of Ionia. I’ll bear witness to a variety of more than 100 vehicles and look forward to seeing cars that have never been at the event before.

Pontiac fans love to hate the Turbo Trans Am, which used a 210-horsepower 301ci V8 and a turbocharger to replace the glorious 220-horse 400 used in the previous year. Though horsepower was almost comparable, performance was not. It would take a few more years for an American car to demonstrate the turbo’s strengths.

If you’re a child of the 1980s, there was only one car: the Lamborghini Countach. Nothing was wilder, faster, or more desired. It was on your bedroom wall, just beside your Budweiser beach towel poster. Can you believe it has been 50 years since production began?

Two-door station wagons are an interesting footnote in postwar American automotive history, as the body style had been relegated to obsolescence by most manufacturers by the beginning of the 1960s. Featured on AutoHunter is this 1966 Ford Mustang coupe that was built by Mike and Connor Hall, the father and son duo from the History Channel series “Rust Valley Restorers” on Netflix (S1, E4). The pony car is powered by a Mustang Cobra 5.0-liter V8 paired with a BorgWarner five-speed manual transmission. Features include Wilwood disc brakes, 17-inch aluminum wheels, a DynoTech driveshaft, a limited-slip rear, and more. Finished in red over a black interior, this hopped-up Mustang comes with a certificate of authenticity from the builders, an autographed glove box, and British Columbia (Canada) registration.

The Ford Mustang spearheaded the pony car segment and was a leader through 1973, when it became a victim of market forces. Through that time, while competing with the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, Plymouth Barracuda, and Dodge Challenger, Ford never produced a high-performance convertible model.

I recently returned from a quick trip to Michigan. Not sure if you’re familiar, but the auto industry is in every facet of this state. You can be far from Detroit yet still catch a glimpse of a car with “manufacturer” plates that is not yet being produced. I saw two Buick Regal wagons within three days, even though it takes me a year to see two in Phoenix.
