Under new ownership, Jackson's Corner elevates Bend all over again
By Jared Rasic L ook, I went into this weekend fully intending to go see "Red On e," that new movie where The Rock, Chris Evans and a polar bear have to rescue a kidnapped (and completely jacked) Santa Claus, but then I realized that, ultimately, that movie is probably as critic proof as it possibly gets. You don't need me to tell you whether it's worth your time because if you've seen the trailer then you absolutely already know if it's for you or not. I'm sure it's fun and probably at least a little entertaining, but there's doubtfully much to really decode from it. So instead, I figure we'll all gain something more from a look at three of the high-profile independent movies that are in a lot of early discussions about the upcoming Oscars.

By Jared Rasic T his is the time of year where I start watching Christmas movies with a gleeful and reckless abandon... quality be damned. It doesn't really matter if it's good or not because ultimately most of those Hallmark movies (or the new Netflix breed) have the exact same structure and arc with only a few mild variations. The quality is relative to exactly what you're looking to get out of the movies because you're not getting a masterpiece, no matter what. If you're shooting for something optimistic and filled with a specifically "American" sort of cheer that's desperately trying to get the audience to feel a special sort of way, then look no further.

By Jared Rasic S ometimes, a movie gets released that's so bad you know someone at the studio lost their job, and the filmmaker will probably end up in director's jail for a few years. When that same studio releases three movies in the same universe that are so insanely, preposterously stupid (while also hemorrhaging money) that they become instantly meme'd to the point of full cultural saturation... then they're in the situation that Sony finds itself in right now. It's pretty hilarious.
