Bard College will get a visit from literary royalty today, October 21, when world-renowned writer Joyce Carol Oates gives a reading at the campus’s Chapel of the Holy Innocents.

Last month brought the wonderful and welcome news about the unveiling of a new live music venue in Kingston’s Stockade district, a place to at last fill the mid-sized-nightclub void left by the closure of the late, lamented BSP. On December 30 and 31, Assembly will open with performances by powerhouse local quartet the Felice Brothers.

Well, last week was a hard week. And the road ahead will be long. But we will get through this. Helping along the way will be happenings that celebrate the counterculture and by extension foster diverse, creative, and progressive modes of thinking—while bringing some much-needed lightness and relief. One such event is “Granny Takes a Trip” an exhibition of pop-culture collectibles at the Kingston Pop Museum that will open on November 16.

Now this sounds like a solid bet for a night of great music in a cozy venue. Steve Forbert and his trio will make their way to the Towne Crier on November 24 in support of the Daylight Savings Time, the singer-songwriter’s 21st(!) album.
