Tabanka is a casual Trinidadian restaurant in a North Lauderdale strip mall, and an essential addition to your personal doubles bucket list (if you have one of those). Thereās an assembly line ordering system here. If you want something quick, go for one of the roti meals, which come with chicken, goat, duck, shrimp, or potatoes and pumpkin. But we love the bake and shark. Itāll take a little longer because they cook it to order, but the gloriously messy fried fish sandwich is worth 15 minutes of anticipation. Plus, you can hit up the doubles station (right next to the cash register) while you wait. Thereās a nice man ready to hand yours over immediately, and Tabankaās doubles are excellent: fluffy, a little sweet, and too easy to inhale in 17 seconds.
Rainbow Palace is a time machine. And if you long for the ā90s, you will fall in love with this Chinese restaurantās plush red carpet and unfathomable amount of crystal chandeliers. Thereās an old-school fine dining attitude to the place, with servers in suspenders wheeling over big carts to dole out individual portions. Those portions are unfortunately the biggest issue here, and make eating as a party of four difficult (order the $46 sesame shrimp and everyone will receive one solitary shrimp). At least they still pour cocktails like itās 1994 (generously) and the food is tasty, especially the crispy steak, a New York strip encased in a crunchy, tempura-like shell.
This is a restaurant designed for people who woke up today and said to themselves, āI think I want a smashburger.ā Thatās pretty much all this narrow spot does, and if thereās a better smashburger in the Fort Lauderdale area, we havenāt found it. Itās a refreshingly simple version with a lacey-edged patty (make it a double) that isnāt so smashed that you canāt taste the beef. The biggest surprise on the menu is actually the tater tots, which are golden and shattery, and pair phenomenally with BMCās curry ketchup.
