VALLEY — Meeting on Thursday evening, the Valley City Council sold property and approved funding for a youth baseball team to participate in the Division II AAA World Series in Bossier City, Louisiana later on this month.

LaFAYETTE — The Essie J. Handy Memorial Cemetery has been a special place in LaFayette for a long time and is even more special today following the dedication of a new gazebo and memorial brick walkway on Thursday. The completion of the project was marked by a 3 p.m. CDT ribbon-cutting ceremony.

WEST POINT — Kevin Carter was the guest speaker at last Thursday's meeting of the West Point Rotary Club and talked about the challenges the department has gone through over the past couple of years. Carter has been the city's police chief for approximately one year and has been with the WPPD since 2011. He began his law enforcement career in LaGrange in 2006.

LANETT — The City of Lanett acquired two new vans for its senior center program this year, and two more new ones are being sought for the 2024-25 fiscal year.

OPELIKA, Ala. — Five Korean War veterans from Chambers County were honored in an appreciation luncheon Wednesday afternoon at the Coca-Cola Event Center in historic downtown Opelika. The group included Edward Ray Anderson, Lanny Bledsoe, Leon Davis Brown, John Emfinger, and Charles Pigg. Two veterans who were there last year, John Daniel and Will Maples, both passed away within the past year and were honored posthumously.

VALLEY — This past Friday was Free Tomato Sandwich Day at the Valley Farmers Market. Valley Parks & Recreation Director Laurie Blount was prepared to make up to 200 tomato sandwiches for those who turned out for the 3 to 6 p.m. EDT weekly session.

VALLEY — At its Monday meeting, the Valley City Council dealt with recent rain-related issues. Storms that have moved through the city over the past few days have brought down trees and have damaged city streets and driveways.

LANETT — The Lanett City Council met in a called meeting on Wednesday morning to approve two action items. One is a resolution to accept a partnership with Groundswell, Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that helps income-eligible households improve the energy efficiency of their homes. The second resolution is to seek a $10,000 grant through the Coosa Valley Resource Conservation & Development Council (RC&D) to improve the air conditioning in a computer lab and library at the Lanett Senior Nutrtion Center.
