For working AP teams, however, another figure rarely makes it into those conversations: the volume of flagged exceptions that grew faster than the team could work through them. Exception reports often produce more flagged transactions per shift than the available investigators can realistically review. The team prioritizes the highest-dollar items and the events tied to known repeat offenders, which is the right call, but the unreviewed volume accumulates, and over time, much of it ages out of the data retention period before it is ever opened.
