Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the mean age of eruption of permanent teeth and their clinical emergence sequence in a longitudinal sample of children from a multi-ethnic urban population. Methods: A total of 854 children (413 females and 441 males), aged between 4 and 13 years, were examined annually for a minimum of 4 consecutive years, as part of their annual dental screening appointment. The presence of permanent teeth was recorded at each examination. Mean and median ages, with standard deviations, of individual tooth eruption were calculated, in addition to the eruption sequence, and the analysis of the data was performed using the lognormal distribution model. Regarding the error of the method, two examiners reviewed all relevant dental screening forms, and any discrepancies were resolved through consultation with the senior author. Results: The sequence of permanent tooth eruption followed a consistent pattern across sexes, with distinct differences between the maxillary and mandibular arches. In the maxilla, eruption began with the first molar, while in the mandible, it started with the central incisor. Mandibular teeth generally erupted earlier than maxillary teeth, with girls experiencing earlier eruption than boys, with some exceptions, and prolonged eruption periods. No statistically significant differences were found in the timing of eruption between contralateral homologous teeth. Conclusions: Based on the present data, the observed sequence of tooth eruption in a multi-ethnic urban population showed similar patterns across sexes. Mandibular teeth generally erupt earlier than maxillary teeth, with girls experiencing earlier eruption than boys.

To determine if exposing embryos to light during incubation affects antibody titer and corticosterone immediately following hatch, we incubated layer eggs and exposed them to light or darkness and vaccinated a subset of each treatment against Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) using in ovo administration on ED 18, spray application at hatch (d 0), or not at all. There were six treatments: light incubated and non-vaccinated (LNV), light incubated and in ovo vaccinated (LIV), light incubated and post-hatch vaccinated (LPHV), dark incubated and non-vaccinated (DNV), dark incubated and in ovo-vaccinated (DIV), and dark incubated and post-hatch vaccinated (DPHV). Plasma corticosterone (CORT) and NDV antibody titers were measured on d 0, 7, and 14. Light-incubated chicks had lower (p 0.05) between light- and dark-incubated chicks on d 0, 7, or 14. However, LIV chicks had higher antibody titers than LPHV on d 14. Exposing embryos to continuous green light during incubation may reduce stress during the early post-hatch period. Vaccination method, rather than exposure to continuous green light during incubation, may have a greater impact on humoral immune response post-hatch.

In situ observations of belowground tree–grass interactions are sparse in savanna ecosystems. In this study, we analyzed stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) in soils and plants from four study sites in an African savanna ecosystem along the Kalahari moisture gradient. The homogeneous soil texture, primarily sandy soils, is well-drained and nutrient-poor, influencing vegetation and water retention uniformly across the region. At each site, soil samples were collected from a 120 cm deep soil profile. We used a 2-endmember mass balance approach to calculate the relative contributions of C3 and C4 plants to SOC in the 120 m soil profile. The wettest site was dominated by trees, whereas the driest site was dominated by shrubs. The intermediates had the highest amount of grass biomass. Our results revealed that tree- and shrub-derived SOC was highest in the wettest and driest sites, respectively. The contribution of C3 plants was 63.8% and 55.8%, in the wettest and driest sites, respectively, when integrating the 120 cm depth. Grass-derived SOC was highest (69.4%) in the middle of the precipitation gradient when integrating the 120 cm depth. The δ15N values were highest in the middle of the precipitation gradient (10.7‰) and lowest in the wettest site (5.2‰). Our findings indicate that belowground tree–grass interactions and nitrogen cycling in savanna ecosystems are more complex than previously thought and do not conform to the traditional concept of the two-layer roots hypothesis. This lack of conformity could be attributed to several factors, including overlap in rooting depth and ecological drivers, such as wildfires and herbivory, which could stimulate production of belowground biomass. We used space-for-time substitution to leverage the region’s steep north–south precipitation gradient and homogeneous soil texture. Our results indicated that trees and shrubs would become an important SOC source in the two extreme sites of the transect, while grass would become an important SOC source in the middle of the precipitation gradient.

Public Safety Personnel (PSP) face numerous potentially psychologically traumatic events in the line of duty. Resilience courses intended to mitigate the effects of operational stress injuries in this population—many of which are available online—have proliferated in recent years. An environmental scan yielded 15 courses that met all inclusion criteria. Courses were required to be offered for $250 or less and had to be created and/or hosted in Canada. Courses focused on individual (n = 7), family (n = 2), or workplace (n = 6) resilience. A qualitative content analysis was conducted. Data were extracted from public-facing documents and course materials, and supplemented by additional text materials and contacting program staff for clarification, when necessary. Coding and synthesis were completed in iterative team meetings. Courses were compared across numerous dimensions, including focus, intended audience, cost, enrollment details, length, instructional style, customization for PSP, and completion requirements. Nearly half of the courses (46.7%) were available free of charge. Outcome data were available for four of the courses, with most studies showing initial gains in resilience, skills, knowledge, attitudes, intentions, and/or behaviors, but with evidence of skill decay over time. The potential benefit of short refresher sessions warrants further investigation.
