Chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), arterial hypertension (HTN), and obesity are significant global health challenges, contributing to millions of premature deaths. In Mexico, these pose major challenges due to limited access to healthcare and inadequate primary care quality. Complementary medicine presents itself as an adjuvant in this context, offering minimally invasive techniques to enhance physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. However, effective treatment adherence is crucial for positive outcomes, influenced by self-efficacy, resulting in persistently low adherence rates—a pressing public health concern. This observational study aimed to explore how perceptions of complementary medicine and treatment adherence predict self-efficacy among individuals with chronic diseases in Mexico. Data were collected from 113 participants with chronic conditions, including T2DM, HTN, and obesity. Participants completed surveys assessing perception of complementary medicine, treatment adherence, and self-efficacy. Statistical analyses, including correlations and regression, were conducted to examine the relationships between variables. The study revealed significant correlations between the perception of complementary medicine, treatment adherence, and self-efficacy. Treatment adherence was positively associated with self-efficacy, while perception of holistic medicine was negatively correlated with self-efficacy. In Europe, sports food supplements (SSFs) are subject to specific laws and regulations. Up to 70% of athletes are highly influenced by the information on the label or the advertisement of the SSF, which often does not correspond to the scientific evidence, such as health claims. The aim is to analyze such claims relating to sports drinks (SDs) in commercial messages. To this end, an observational and cross-sectional study was conducted based on the analysis of the content and degree of adequacy of the health claims indicated on the labelling or technical data sheet of the SDs with those established by the European legislation in force according to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The SSFs were searched for via Amazon and Google Shopping. A total of 114 health claims were evaluated. No claim fully conformed with the recommendations. A total of 14 claims (n = 13 products) almost conformed to the recommendations; they were “Maintain endurance level in exercises requiring prolonged endurance”, “Improve water absorption during physical exercise”, and “Improved physical performance during high intensity, high duration physical exercise in trained adults”, representing 12.3% of the total (n = 114). The vast majority of the claims identified indicated an unproven cause–effect and should be modified or eliminated, which amounts to food fraud towards the consumer.

Additive manufacturing (AM) has been fully incorporated into both the academic and the industrial world. This technology has been shown to lower costs and environmental impacts. Moreover, AM-based technologies, such as wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), have been proven suitable for the manufacturing of large products with significant mechanical requirements. This study examines the manufacture of two aeronautical toolings: first, using conventional techniques, and second, using a big area additive manufacturing (BAAM) process, specifically WAAM technology, followed by second-stage hybrid machining. Both toolings can be considered interchangeable in terms of design and performance. Energy and material consumption were analysed and compared throughout both tooling procedures. The results show the important optimisation of both procedures in manufacturing WAAM tooling, encompassing the additive process and second-stage hybrid machining. Nevertheless, the time required for WAAM tooling manufacturing increased significantly compared to conventional manufacturing tooling. Moreover, based on metrology data from the AM process, a theoretical study was conducted to assess different design optimisations for WAAM tooling manufacturing and determine their influence on material and energy consumption. These theoretical results improve those already obtained regarding energy and raw material savings.

This study compares a standard monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) with two rotationally asymmetric refractive multifocal IOLs, analyzing power profiles and wavefront data across three nominal powers. Tested IOLs included monofocal Acunex AN6 and multifocal AN6V (addition +1.50 D) and AN6VM (addition +3.00 D) by Teleon Surgical, at powers +10.00 D, +20.00 D, and +30.00 D. Using NIMO TR1504, power profiles, spherical aberration, and coma were analyzed. Multifocal lenses displayed an asymmetrical design, with zones for far and near vision and a central notch for far power. The multifocal AN6V and AN6VM showed neutral spherical aberration in the center, increasing to positive values, and finally achieving negative values towards the periphery. The vertical coma coefficient [Z(3:−1)] remains almost stable for the monofocal IOLs. The lower-addition multifocal IOLs induce primary vertical coma of +0.11 microns at 3 mm away from the lens center compared to +0.21 microns obtained with the high-addition lens. We can conclude that the multifocal AN6V and AN6VM lenses display an asymmetrical design. The final addition provided by these lenses depends on its nominal power. The variation of SA with optic size is more pronounced for the monofocal model, and it is dependent on the nominal power.

This study delves into the impacts of the 2008 global financial crisis (GFC) and the COVID-19 health crisis on U.S. financial indices, exploring the intricate relationship between economic shocks and these indices during downturns. Using Markov switching regression models and control variables, including GDP, consumer sentiment, industrial production, and the ratio of inventories-to-sale, it quantifies the effects of these crises on the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), Standard & Poor's 500 (S&P 500), and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) from Q1 2000 to Q2 2023, covering crucial moments of both crises and stable periods (dichotomous variables). Results reveal that the 2008 crisis significantly heightened financial volatility and depreciated the valuation of S&P 500 and DJIA indicators, while the COVID-19 crisis had a diverse impact on market dynamics, particularly negatively affecting specific sectors. This study underscores the importance of consumer confidence and inventory management in mitigating financial volatility and emphasises the need for robust policy measures to address economic shocks, enhance financial stability, and alleviate future crises, especially during endogenous crises such as financial downturns. This research sheds light on the nuanced impact of crises on financial markets and the broader economy, revealing the intricate dynamics shaping market behaviour during turbulent times.
