Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common during pregnancy and linked to adverse outcomes. While oxidative stress is a proposed pathogenic mechanism, evidence in pregnant populations remains limited. This multicenter, prospective study evaluated oxidative stress through protein carbonyl levels in 171 pregnant women and 86 cord blood samples. Polysomnography (PSG) performed during pregnancy categorized participants with the apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) in OSA, rapid eye movement (REM) OSA, and supine OSA. Protein carbonyl levels were measured by the dinitrophenyl hydrazine (DNPH) method. No significant differences were found in maternal or cord blood protein carbonyl levels between OSA and non-OSA groups, or between REM and supine OSA subgroups. Interestingly, women with shorter apnea–hypopnea (AH) length showed both higher maternal and cord blood protein carbonyl levels and lower nocturnal oxygen saturation. Overall, OSA in pregnancy was not associated with increased oxidative stress as measured by protein carbonyl levels. However, apnea–hypopnea duration and nocturnal hypoxia may influence oxidative stress, pointing to a complex relationship between OSA and oxidative stress during pregnancy, beyond traditional metrics like AHI. Future studies should explore additional biomarkers and diverse molecular pathways that could play a role, with special attention to emerging factors such as apnea–hypopnea length and hypoxic burden to elucidate the interrelationships between OSA and pregnancy more comprehensively.

Metal–organic cages (MOCs) are discrete supramolecular entities consisting of metal nodes and organic connectors or linkers; MOCs are noted for their high porosity and processability. Chemically, they can be post-synthetically modified (PSM) and new functional groups can be introduced, presenting attractive qualities, and it is expected that their new properties will differ from those of the original compound. This is why they are highly regarded in the fields of biology and chemistry. The present review deals with the current PSM strategies used for MOCs, including covalent, coordination, and noncovalent methods and their structural benefits. The main emphasis of this review is to show to what extent and under what circumstances a MOC can be designed to obtain a tailored geometric architecture. Although sometimes unclear when examining supramolecular systems, particularizing the design of and systematic approaches to the development and characterization of families of MOCs provides new insights into structure–function relationships, which will guide future developments.

The Curiosity rover, from NASA's Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), has climbed nearly 740 m from its landing location at −4500.971 m in Gale Crater to a location reached on sol 3967 on the slopes of Mt. Sharp at −3765.27 m. We examine the atmospheric pressure, surface and atmospheric temperatures, relative humidity, and water vapor volume mixing ratios from measurements made by the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS), taken along the trajectory traveled over 3967 sols spanning from late MY31 to mid-MY37, on an interannual scale. The results help us understand the Martian meteorology inside Gale Crater. The atmospheric pressure and temperature changes caused by the elevation variation of the rover show the impact of the altitude change on the atmospheric dynamics. Regarding the rover's locations for MY32 and MY36, a detailed comparative analysis of the full diurnal cycle is performed for the solstices and equinoxes. These scenarios are examined using the REMS and the Mars Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (MRAMS) data. We compare the REMS and MRAMS data to evaluate their concordance. We present, for the first time, a hypothesis for the existence of the cold pool phenomenon, which also occurs on Earth, based on REMS data.

Quantifying and mapping evapotranspiration (ET) from land surfaces is crucial in the context of climate change. For decades, remote sensing data have been utilized to estimate ET, leading to the development of numerous algorithms. However, their application is still non-trivial, mainly due to practical constraints. This paper introduces geeSSEBI, a Google Earth Engine implementation of the S-SEBI (Simplified Surface Energy Balance Index) model, for deriving ET from Landsat data and ERA5-land radiation. The source code and a graphical user interface implemented as a Google Earth Engine application are provided. The model ran on 871 images, and the estimates were evaluated against multiyear data of four eddy covariance towers belonging to the ICOS network, representative of both forests and agricultural landscapes. The model showed an RMSE of approximately 1 mm/day, and a significant correlation with the observed values, at all the sites. A procedure to upscale the data to monthly is proposed and tested as well, and its accuracy evaluated. Overall, the model showed acceptable accuracy, while performing better on forest ecosystems than on agricultural ones, especially at daily and monthly timescales. This implementation is particularly valuable for mapping evapotranspiration in data-scarce environments by utilizing Landsat archives and ERA5-land radiation estimates.

Natriuretic peptides are established biomarkers related to the prognosis of heart failure. New biomarkers have emerged in the field of cardiovascular disease. The prognostic value of these biomarkers in heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction is not well-established. We conducted a prospective, single-centre study, including (July 2019 to March 2023) 104 patients being consecutively admitted with a diagnosis of acute heart failure with reduced ejection fraction decompensation. The median follow-up was 23.5 months, during which 20 deaths (19.4%) and 21 readmissions for heart failure (20.2%) were recorded. Plasma biomarkers, such as NT-proBNP, GDF-15, sST2, suPAR, and FGF-23, were associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality. However, a Cox regression analysis showed that the strongest predictors of mortality were an estimated glomerular filtration rate (HR 0.96 [0.93–0.98]), GDF-15 (HR 1.3 [1.16–1.45]), and sST2 (HR 1.2 [1.11–1.35]). The strongest predictive model was formed by the combination of the glomerular filtration rate and sST2 (C-index 0.758). In conclusion, in patients with acute decompensated heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, GDF-15 and sST2 showed the highest predictive power for all-cause mortality, which was superior to other established biomarkers such as natriuretic peptides. GDF-15 and sST2 may provide additional prognostic information to improve the prognostic assessment.

Structural health monitoring is vital for the safety and longevity of infrastructure, particularly in seismic zones. This study focuses on identifying the dynamic properties of a reinforced concrete building in Chile's Valparaíso region. Using an experimental approach, the study compares ambient vibration records, seismic events (moment magnitude > 4), and data collected during adjacent construction activities. Force-balanced accelerometers were used for vibration measurements. The analysis employs the Stochastic Subspace Identification with Covariances (SSI-COV) method within an operational modal analysis framework to extract the building's modal parameters without requiring artificial excitations. This technique effectively identifies modal characteristics under different vibration sources, making it suitable for evaluating the structural condition under diverse loading conditions. The findings reveal the building's modes and frequencies, offering critical insights for maintenance and management of infrastructure. Little to no variations were observed in the identified frequencies of the building when working with different types of input data. These data support the integration of real-time IoT systems for continuous monitoring, providing a foundation for future digital twin applications. These advancements facilitate early deterioration detection, enhancing resilience in seismic environments.
